The Five Fs of Life: Faith – How to Build a Strong Spiritual Foundation Through Quiet Time

The Five Fs of Life: Faith
When I think about what truly makes life good, balanced, and fulfilling in God, a few key areas stand out to me. These are what I call “The Five Fs of Life“:
- Faith
- Fun
- Finance
- Fitness (physical health)
- Family
Each one matters, but faith comes first. Faith is the foundation. Without it, the other areas of life can easily lose direction and purpose.
Why Faith Comes First
Faith is more than believing in God. Faith is a relationship. It is walking with God daily, listening to Him, trusting Him, and allowing Him to shape the way we live.
A life rooted in faith is not free from challenges, but it is stable. Faith keeps us anchored when life feels confusing, painful, or uncertain. It reminds us that God is present and active in every season.
One of the most important ways our faith grows is through what is commonly called “quiet time“.
What Is Quiet Time?
Quiet time is a set-apart time between you and God. It is a moment of stillness where you intentionally step away from distractions to spend quality time with Him.
Quiet time is where:
- You speak to God
- You listen to God
- You learn from God
- You allow God to work on your heart
This time is often best done in the morning. The Bible shows us that Jesus made it a habit to spend time with God early in the day.
“Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.” – Mark 1:35 (NLT)
Before responding to the world, before checking your phone, before scrolling social media, there is power in first responding to God.
Quiet Time Is Not Rushing Through the Bible
Quiet time is not about speed.
It is not about ticking a box.
It is not about reading one verse and rushing out the door.
Quiet time is about depth.
It is a time to study Scripture, reflect, ask questions, and allow God’s Word to speak to areas of your life where growth is needed. You may focus on a particular passage, topic, or character in the Bible that God is drawing your attention to.
The goal is not just knowledge.
The goal is transformation.
“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says.” – James 1:22 (NLT)
Studying the Bible Using the SOAP Method
One helpful way to structure your quiet time is the SOAP method:
- S – Scripture
Write out the verse or passage you are reading. - O – Observation
What stands out to you? What is happening in the passage? What do you notice? - A – Application
How does this apply to your life right now? What is God asking you to change, start, or grow in? - P – Prayer
Pray about what you have read. Ask God for grace to live it out.
Using a journal is very important. Writing helps you slow down, reflect, and clearly see what God is teaching you.
Living Out What You Learn
Quiet time is not meant to stay on the pages of your journal. It is meant to shape how you live daily.
Faith grows when we obey what we learn. When we forgive. When we trust God even when it feels uncomfortable. When we choose His way over our own.
This is why quiet time matters. It is where faith becomes practical and personal.
Choosing the Bible Over Devotionals
Devotionals are helpful, but they should not replace the Word of God. Our main spiritual nourishment should come directly from Scripture.
If you find the Bible hard to understand, choose a simpler translation such as:
- NIV
- NLT
- Easy-to-Read Version
Before reading, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand and apply the Word.
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” – Psalm 119:105 (NLT)
Balancing Study and Prayer
Quiet time involves both listening and speaking. If you spend 30 minutes studying the Word, try to also spend 20 to 30 minutes in prayer. Keep it balanced.
Faith grows through relationship, and relationship grows through conversation.
Conclusion: Building a Life That Lasts
Faith is not just one part of your life. It is the foundation that holds everything else together.
When your faith is strong, your decisions become clearer, your heart becomes steadier, and your life begins to reflect God’s purpose in every area. Fun becomes meaningful, finances become guided, fitness becomes intentional, and family becomes nurtured in love.
Start small if you need to, but start consistently. Even a few minutes of genuine, focused time with God each day can begin to transform your life.
As you build your faith, you are not just creating a routine. You are building a life that is rooted, grounded, and able to stand through every season.
