Why Fitness is More Than Exercise

When we talk about health and wellness, many people immediately think of exercise or dieting. While these are important, true fitness is far more holistic. God designed our bodies as temples, our minds as precious spaces, and our hearts as vessels that need constant care and restoration. Fitness is not just about having toned muscles or walking 10,000 steps. It is about being healthy emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

For me, fitness is a journey. Growing up, I did not know how to care for my body, and now in my thirties, I feel the consequences of neglect. My body does not allow me to ignore health anymore. That is why I have made it a goal this year to consistently move, stretch, and rest even in small increments.

I have also learned that self-care includes setting boundaries, taking breaks, and listening to your body. Recently, I had to take a full week off work to recover from burnout. That rest was not optional. It was necessary. Fitness is not about perfection. It is about consistency, awareness, and intentionality.

Our Bodies Are God’s Temple

The Bible reminds us: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

Taking care of our bodies is an act of worship. When we nourish ourselves with good food, exercise, and proper rest, we honor God and show gratitude for the life He has given us.

Practical Steps to Care for Your Physical Health

Caring for your body does not have to be overwhelming. Even small, consistent efforts matter.

  • Exercise in manageable chunks: You do not have to spend hours at the gym. Even ten minutes a day, four times a week, is enough to keep your body moving. On days you cannot manage ten minutes, do five or even three. Every movement counts.
  • Walking: I personally walk between 5,000 and 7,000 steps on average, and it keeps my body active.
  • Stretching and flexibility: Stretching reduces stiffness, prevents injury, and supports your overall movement.
  • Nutrition: Eat mindfully. Incorporate whole foods, vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins into your meals. Avoid excessive processed foods or skipping meals.
  • Rest and sleep: Rest is more than sleep. It allows your body to recover, your mind to recharge, and your spirit to be renewed.

As singles, rest often feels foreign. We are accustomed to constant hustle, working, caring for family, sending support home, or building our lives. But God modeled rest for us:

“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing. So on the seventh day he rested from all his work.” – Genesis 2:2 (NIV)

Rest is not laziness. It is a command from God to restore and rejuvenate us.

Emotional and Mental Fitness

Fitness is not just physical. Emotional and mental health are equally important. Our minds are often the battlefield where the enemy attacks, planting thoughts of fear, inadequacy, or doubt. Guarding our hearts and minds is essential:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Practical steps for mental fitness:

  • Therapy and counseling: I have worked with a therapist since 2021, which has helped me navigate emotional triggers and mental health challenges.
  • Identify triggers: Know what affects your mental state, whether it is finances, family stress, or physical health, and take proactive steps to protect your peace.
  • Meditate on the Word: Reading and meditating on Scripture washes our minds and strengthens our spirit. It is spiritual hygiene for our thoughts.
  • Journaling and reflection: Writing down your thoughts, gratitude, and prayers clears mental clutter and provides emotional clarity.

Spiritual Fitness

Our body and mind are connected to our spirit. Ignoring our spiritual health affects overall wellness. Daily prayer, meditation on Scripture, and worship are essential for staying grounded, especially during trials and stress.

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” – 1 Timothy 4:8 (NIV)

God desires for us to be fit in every area, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. When one area is neglected, it affects the others.

In Conclusion

Fitness is not just about the body. It is about honoring God with your whole self. By being intentional about your health, you allow God to use you fully, with energy, clarity, and joy.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV)

Take care of your body. Take care of your mind. Take care of your spirit. Your health is an act of worship, and your fitness is a lifestyle that honors God in every area of life.
