The Danger of Distraction: Lessons from Proverbs 31:4

It is not for kings, Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer.” – Proverbs 31:4 (NIV)

There’s something powerful about a mother’s words, especially when they’re full of godly wisdom and concern for her child’s future. Proverbs 31 is most famous for its description of the virtuous woman, but before that beautiful portrait begins, the chapter opens with a mother giving heartfelt counsel to her son, King Lemuel.

In verse 4, she says something that stopped me in my tracks. This scripture goes beyond a warning about alcohol. It is a reminder of identity, responsibility, and purpose. Lemuel was a king. His life could not be lived like everyone else’s. His decisions affected nations, and his actions carried weight. His mother was essentially saying, “You don’t have the luxury of carelessness. You are royalty. Live like it.

Not Everything Is for You

This warning is not just about wine or beer. It is about anything that clouds judgment or weakens resolve. It is about distractions that pull you away from clarity, purpose, and God.

Whether you are a man or a woman, this applies. But as a single woman walking in purpose and preparing to be the kind of Proverbs 31 woman the Bible talks about, this verse holds deep relevance.

Some things are not for you. Not because they are always wrong, but because they threaten your destiny.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” — 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

As a daughter of the King, you are not ordinary. You do not live like the world. You do not chase trends, crave attention, or compromise values. You are set apart, and with that comes a higher standard.

Distraction Can Derail Destiny

Wine and beer are symbols of anything that numbs or distracts. Maybe your version isn’t alcohol. Maybe it’s people pleasing, emotional impulsiveness, laziness, comparison, or endless scrolling on social media.

For me, it was my phone.

I battled with screen time and phone addiction. Watching YouTube every day became an escape. Scrolling through Instagram felt like rest, but it was actually draining me. It dulled my focus, robbed me of productivity, and slowly pulled me away from God’s voice.

When I started stepping away, taking social media fasts, and cutting down screen time, I noticed a shift. I became more present, more productive, and more connected to real-life people. Anxiety lifted.

That’s what Proverbs 31:4 is all about. It is not just wine. It is “anything” that clouds our spiritual clarity or steals our strength.

What Are You Taking In?

This verse made me ask: “What am I allowing into my life every day? What am I feeding on emotionally, mentally, and spiritually?

We may not be guzzling wine, but many of us are consuming gossip, toxic friendships, or constant entertainment. We numb our pain with food, sleep, noise, or screens. We scroll to forget. We binge-watch to escape.

But numbing is not healing. Distraction is not rest.

Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible,” but I will not be mastered by anything. – 1 Corinthians 6:12 (NIV)

We were not made to be addicted to anything except God. When something else takes up too much room in our hearts, it becomes an idol. That’s how even good things become dangerous.

Is this Royalty Behavior?

I had to take a hard look at myself. Do I live like someone who belongs to God? Do my habits reflect my calling?

It is not just about drinking. It is about anything unworthy of royalty.

A queen does not chase. She carries herself with confidence. She knows who she is and whose she is.

Godly Standards in a Loud World

As women of God, we must protect our minds, our time, and our energy. That means saying no to certain habits, even ones that feel normal.

Drinking is not a sin, but losing self-control is. The Bible warns us:

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” – Ephesians 5:18 (NIV)

So what is your coping mechanism? When life gets hard, do you run to God, or do you run to other forms of drinking like shopping, sleeping, or overthinking?

I have had to repent. To say, “Lord, I’ve been choosing comfort over Your presence.” And each time, God in His mercy draws me back.

Guard Your Strength

As women, we carry strength, emotional, spiritual, and mental. That strength is sacred. Like Lemuel’s mother warned him not to waste it on wine, we too must not waste ours on what drains and distracts.

Ask yourself:

  • What is weakening my focus?
  • What am I giving too much of my time and energy to?
  • Am I using my strength to build or to numb?

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

Your strength is for a purpose. Don’t let it be diluted by distractions.

You Are Not Called to Be Average

You are a woman of purpose, of calling, of royalty. Not everything is for you. Not every man is for you. Not every friendship or habit is for you.

And that is not punishment. It is protection. God is guarding your destiny. Don’t resent the boundaries. Embrace them. The earlier you lean into that truth, the more peace you will find.

Closing Encouragement

Proverbs 31:4 is not just about alcohol. It is a principle for life. A loving warning that reminds us of who we are. We are kings and queens under the rule of Christ. We are leaders, nurturers, builders, and light-bearers in a dark world.

So today, be honest with yourself:

  • What is not for you in this season?
  • Where are you numbing instead of healing?
  • What behavior do you need to let go of to live like royalty?

God is shaping you into a woman of strength, focus, and deep spiritual power. Don’t let distractions dull your shine. Choose clarity over compromise. Purpose over pleasure. Royalty over recklessness.

You were made for more.
